Trigger finger isn’t fun to live with, but the good news is that it’s treatable!

So, what exactly is trigger finger? No, it’s not a condition caused solely by pulling a trigger! Trigger finger is when the tendons in your hand are inflamed and cause the hand to thicken and swell, which means it hurts to bend, straighten or use fingers and thumbs.

What causes trigger finger to occur in a person?  Common causes can include, but are not limited to, repetitive gripping and use, arthritis, and injury.

Common treatment options include rest, splinting, medications, cortisone injection, and surgery.

The treatment you will receive on your trigger finger will depend on its severity, duration, and your personal medical history.

A doctor may recommend:

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibrprofen or naproxen, which will relieve pain.
  • You should stay away from repetitive gripping activities or machines with vibrating hand-held machinery. Padded gloves may help you feel better if you can’t fully avoid this activities.
  • Stretching your hand and fingers may help with pain and mobility.
  • A splint. If you wear a splint at night, it can help rest the tendon.
  • Steroid injections near or into the tendon shealth may reduce inflammation. This treatment can be effective for a year or more. Multiple injections may be needed.
  • Percutaneous release. A needle is inserted into the tissue surrounding your tendon to break apart constriction that is blocking the motion of the tendon.
  • The surgeon will cut open the constricted portion of the tendon sheath.

The treatment that works for you may take some trial and error, but the release of pain you will feel will be worth the effort!
